Explained: WhatsApp vs iMessage – what’s same, what’s different
WhatsApp vs iMessage: Cross-platform support
WhatsApp supports cross-platform access (including Android and iOS) while iMessage works only on Apple devices like — iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch.
WhatsApp vs iMessage: Connectivity
WhatsApp works only over the internet. This means users need to have network connectivity either via mobile data or Wi-Fi to send and receive WhatsApp messages. Meanwhile, the iMessage application can also use the normal short messaging service when internet connectivity is unavailable.
WhatsApp vs iMessage: Video and voice calls
iMessage users have to visit other apps like Phone and FaceTime to make voice and video calls. Depending on your plan, your telecom provider may even charge you for your calls. However, WhatsApp offers calling services (both voice and video) directly into the app. WhatsApp voice and video calls are placed using the internet and the telecom charges are not applicable for this app.
WhatsApp vs iMessage: Groups and multiple messaging
Both instant messaging services allow users to make a group and send a single message to multiple contacts. WhatsApp also allows users to make group video and voice calls which is not available in iMessage. Moreover, an iMessage group can include only 32 members, whereas a WhatsApp group can hold up to 512 participants.
WhatsApp vs iMessage: Web Client
WhatsApp’s web application is compatible with both Windows and Mac devices. The web client of the popular messaging app mirrors conversations and messages from your primary device (smartphone/tablet) and can be accessed via major browsers like — Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox and Opera. However, the web client will work only when the primary device is connected to the internet and its interface is very similar to the one available on mobiles.
On the other hand, iMessage only supports Mac devices and has no official clients for Windows. Various iOS simulators and emulators are available online that can help users to access iMessage on Windows.
WhatsApp vs iMessage: Security
In this case, both messaging services have similar security features. Both WhatsApp and iMessage use end-to-end encryption to make the exchanged messages more secure.
WhatsApp vs iMessage: User base
WhatsApp has a much larger user base than iMessage as it works on both Android and iOS.
