Explained: Windows 11 Task Manager Efficiency Mode, what it does and how it can help boost PC performance and battery life

Windows 11 has a lot of new features (you can check a few of them here). Some of them are commonly known, while some are little known. But, there are some that are lesser-known ones and one such feature is the new Efficiency Mode in Task Manager.
Task Manager is most of the commonly used Windows tools to manage running apps, softwares and background processes. Task Manager allows users to check out all the running apps and background services and close them if not required. Additionally, it also comes with a new Efficiency Mode that let users restrict the system resource usage to reduce system load.
Wondering what this feature does, how to use it and how it can help improve PC performance? Let us explain:
What is Efficiency Mode in Windows 11 Task Manager
Task Manager Efficiency MOde is designed to limit system resource usage by processes running in the background. These processes are usually services that run in the background to support the operations of an active software or app.
Efficiency Mode is basically a rebranded version of Eco Mode introduced in Windows 10. In fact, the functionality also remains the same. Nothing has changed here, except the name.
How the new Efficiency Mode works
When Efficiency Mode is turned on for a particular process, it reduces the number of system resources allocated to that process. This means, the process reduces the system resource consumption and it also reduces the overall resource requirement for the active application that’s using that background process.
Basically, Windows applications and services run on a priority basis. When Efficiency Mode is enabled for a process, it lowers its priority to prevent it from interfering with other higher-priority services and applications.
How it can help with system performance and battery life
As mentioned above, the Efficiency Mode basically reduces the resource allocation to the particular process and hence the application using it. This reduces the load from the CPU and also reduces energy consumption resulting in better thermal management. Combining everything together, the system also consumes less battery life and offers better performance.
How to enable or disable Efficiency Mode on Windows 11

  • Open Task Manager on Windows 11 device
  • Click on the Processes tab
  • Expand the process dropdown and look for an application or service that’s using more resources
  • Now, right-click on it and choose the Efficiency Mode option. Alternatively, you can also click on the Efficiency Mode button at the top of the Task Manager

Once enabled, you’ll see an Efficiency Mode icon in front of the process. Also, keep in mind that for some applications this feature may be disabled. This is because these services are core Windows services and are controlled by Windows itself.
