Facebook-parent Meta brings WhatsApp’s Apple Memoji-like Avatars to Instagram with a ‘twist’ – Times of India
In a tweet, Instagram announced that Instagrammers can add their avatar along with their display images and profile visitors just have to click on the profile picture to switch between both. Until now, Instagram Avatars could only be used on stories and DMs.
“Now you can add your avatar to the other side of your pic — and people who visit your profile can flip between the two,” the company said.

Currently, when you tap a profile picture, it opens the Stories (if available) of that person. It is yet to be seen how this feature will work when it is rolled out to the masses. It is noteworthy that when you tap a profile photo of a user on Facebook, it gives you two options: view profile picture and view Story. There is no ‘flipping’ functionality here.
What is an Avatar?
An Avatar is a digital version of you and users can create an Avatar by choosing the right combination of available hairstyles, facial features and outfits. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, said in a video last year, “Avatars are a key building block for the future of personal identity in the metaverse.”
How to create an Instagram Avatar
- To create a 3D avatar in Instagram, users can tap the hamburger menu on the top left corner of their profiles.
- Tap “Settings” and select “Account”
- Search for “Avatars” and make one for yourself
- In case you have linked your Facebook and Instagram accounts, and have already created an Avatar on Facebook, you can use your Facebook Avatar on Instagram, and save yourself some time.
