Facebook starts to roll out this important security feature on Messenger – Times of India

Facebook has started to roll out end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for voice and video calls on Messenger. The move was announced by Mark Zuckerberg on Facebook. He also announced that the company is introducing opt-in end-to-end encryption for group chats and group audio and video calls too. The security feature was already available on Facebook-owned WhatsApp messaging platform. “End-to-end encrypted voice and video calls are now rolling out on Messenger, and we’re introducing opt-in end-to-end encryption for group chats and group audio and video calls too. I’m proud that we continue to extend encryption across more services.” wrote Mark on Facebook.
What is end-to-end encryption
End-to-end encryption or E2EE is a privacy feature that ensures that only you and the person you’re communicating with can read or listen to what is sent, and nobody in between, not even the company. In simple terms, your data is secured with a lock, and only the recipient and you have the special key needed to unlock and read them.
Recently, the company also announced that the chat backups of WhatsApp users on Android and iOS platforms are now end-to-end encrypted. Users can now secure their chat backup with either a password of their choice or a 64-digit encryption key that only they know.
The company already added end-to-end encryption to one-on-one text chats back in 2016. The plan to add E2EE for voice and video calls on Messenger was announced by the tech giant in August this year.
