Far Cry 6 release date, trailer, gameplay, setting and story
Far Cry 6 is the latest entry in Ubisoft’s popular open-world action franchise, offering players a new island to explore and a new villainous dictator to overthrow.
This will be the first new Far Cry game to release on the PS5 and Xbox Series X so should allow the development team at Ubisoft to take the franchise to new heights thanks to the power of the latest next-gen hardware.
In Spring TG attended a digital preview event and got to see firsthand some of the improvements that Far Cry 6 is making to the formula. We were plenty impressed with what we saw. In fact, the game could be the most polished and mechanically complex entry in the franchise to date.
Far Cry 6 was originally scheduled for an early 2020 release date, but it’s now set to launch in October. That means we’ve still got a few more weeks to wait before we get our hands on the full game, but for now, here’s everything we know about Far Cry 6.
Far Cry 6 release date
Far Cry 6 is set to launch on October 7 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC.
The game was initially announced with a February 2021 release date but was later delayed into the fall due to the coronavirus pandemic impacting its development schedule.
Far Cry 6 trailer
At Ubisoft Forward 2020, we got the world premiere of the first Far Cry 6 trailer. It goes full prestige television cinematic opening credits and gave us an introduction to Anton Castillo, his son Diego, and the revolution that’s toppling his statue.
While the initial announcement trailer is entirely built around cinematics, with no gameplay footage to speak of, over the past year several additional trailers that feature the game in motion have been showcased. You can see them below.
Far Cry 6 villain
Far Cry is a series beloved for its iconic roster of villains. From Vaas in Far Cry 3 to Joseph Seed in Far Cry 5, the series is renowned for its extremely memorable antagonists. Far Cry 6 looks will it will add another unforgettable villain to the list.
Beloved actor Giancarlo Esposito (best known as Breaking Bad’s Gus Fring) will be in playing the game’s big bad, Anton Castillo. From the pre-release material we’ve seen, he definitely looks like one of the series most imposing threats.
Castillo is a ruthless dictator that is described as “intent on restoring his nation back to its former glory by any means, with his son, Diego, following in his bloody footsteps.”
Far Cry 6 setting
Far Cry 6 takes place in Yara, the nation that Anton Castillo’s rules. Far Cry 6’s product copy describes Yara as “a tropical paradise frozen in time.” From the material we’ve seen so far, the island has a mid-twentieth-century look going on, meaning that the vehicles you drive and weapons you wield are probably older than you might have first expected.
Yara is the “largest Far Cry playground to date” (according to its product description), and you’ll fight Anton’s army across its “jungles, beaches and Esperanza the capital city of Yara.” Previous Far Cry games have focussed on rural and remote environments, so seeing how the series tackles urban environments will be particularly interesting.
The similarities between the game’s fictional setting and the real-world country of Cuba have not gone unnoticed. We spoke to the game’s lead designer, David Grivel, during an exclusive preview event about the team’s inspiration when creating Yara.
“We were extremely respectful to the Cuban culture when building the game. We made sure to work with cultural experts,” explained Grivel.
Far Cry 6 story
Far Cry 6 will cast the player as Yaran-born Dani Rojas, a former soldier who becomes a guerrilla fighter desperate to liberate their nation. Dani is, like many of Ubisoft’s recent open-world game protagonists, either male or female depending on your choice at the start of the game.
At Gamescom 2021, Ubisoft debuted a story-focused trailer that gives us an idea of how the game’s narrative will unfold but still leaving us with plenty of additional mysteries to unravel. You can watch it above.
Far Cry 6 gameplay
Far Cry 6 is clearly aiming to evolve the franchise signature formula, without completely abandoning what makes the series so beloved by fans.
It will, just like its predecessors, be a first-person open-world action game in which you wield a variety of weapons from standard guns to more creative offerings such as a disc launcher that spits out CDs.
Guerrilla-style warfare is taking an even bigger focus this time. While you can equip a machine gun and cause carnage on an enemy outpost, the game will encourage the player to be smarter. You’ll be incentivized to use sabotage and clandestine tactics to your advantage, of course, if you do get bored of the more stealthy approach a rocket launcher will be able to solve most problems as well.
There will be a range of ways to get around the island, including even the ability to ride a horse into battle. Car customization will also play a big part in the game, allowing you to strap a gun to the top of an old jeep and drive straight into enemy territory.
Far Cry 6 looks like it will provide the chaotic action the series is known for in spades. We can’t wait to start liberating Yara in October.
