‘iPhone ban’ on Fortnite
Both Apple and Google banned Fortnite in 2020 after it flouted their app store rules, despite being one of the favourites at that time. As per the rules laid down by the tech giants, they will get a 30% cut from the revenue generated from in-app purchases. However, Epic Games stopped it and started its own in-app payment scheme in Fortnite that directly violated Apple and Google’s app store guidelines.
Fortnite revenue
Fortnite is considered to have reignited the craze for battle royale games alongside PUBG and Call of Duty Mobile. For once, it was one of the highest revenue-generating games on the Apple App Store earning over $43.4 million in consumer spending. It saw 2.4 million downloads on the App Store. On Google’s Play Store, it saw 2.1 million downloads and generated $3.4 million in revenue.
When Fortnite was banned, a spokesperson from Apple said, “Epic Games took the unfortunate step of violating the App Store guidelines that are applied equally to every developer and designed to keep the store safe for our users. As a result, their Fortnite app has been removed from the store.”
Apple-Epic Games legal battle
The companies then fought a long legal battle until 10 September 2021, when a judge issued a ruling in favour of Apple saying that it wasn’t a monopoly as Epic had alleged, and rather it was a duopoly alongside Google. Epic was then told to pay Apple $3.6 million, which is 30% of the revenue withheld from Apple in the game company’s attempts to circumvent the App Store.
