TL;DR
- Google has announced that it will be updating Google Workspace.
- As part of the update, Google will be migrating Google Assistant and Calendar Reminders into Google Tasks.
- The update will only affect Google Workspace users for now.
If you’re someone who uses Google Workspace and relies on Google Calendar Reminders to create and view reminders, then you’ll be in for a bit of a surprise soon. A new update to Google Workspaces will be migrating the feature into Google Tasks.
Google has announced today that it is introducing a change that will migrate Google Assistant and Calendar Reminders into Google Tasks. What this means is all of your reminders will now be converted into to-dos that you’ll be able to find in Google Tasks. While Workspace users will still be able to create tasks in their Calendar, everything will be moved to Google Tasks so it can all be found in a single place.
In addition to merging Tasks and Reminders, the update will also bring new functions such as an “Add to Tasks” button in Gmail, the ability to create tasks directly in Google Chat, and the ability to sort tasks into lists.
The rollout won’t happen right away, however. Google says in the coming months, Workspace users will see an opt-in prompt when users create or view reminders in Google Assistant or Calendar. This will allow you to migrate your reminders into Tasks before the migration happens for all Workspace users.
As for when the opt-in notifications will start, there are no details at the moment. There is also no given date for when the big migration that affects all Workspace users will happen either.
At this time, this update is expected to only affect Workspace users. However, it’s plausible that Google could eventually decide to bring the changes to regular users down the road.
