Getty Images files new lawsuit against Stability AI, here’s why
What is Stable Diffusion
Stable Diffusion is an AI-based system for generating images from text inputs developed by Stability AI. In August 2022, the UK-based company also introduced the image generator named DreamStudio.
Why Getty is accusing Stability
As per Getty, Stability has wrongfully copied millions of its photos without a license and has used them to train Stable Diffusion. This training has helped the system to produce more accurate depictions based on user prompts.
The US-based company mentions that its pictures are particularly valuable for AI training. Getty also claimed that its photos are important for image quality, variety of subject matter and detailed metadata. The company also stated that it has already licensed “millions of suitable digital assets” to other “leading technology innovators” for AI-related purposes. However, Getty accuses Stability of infringing its copyrights and competing unfairly with the company.
Getty’s lawsuit also claims that Stability has infringed the company’s trademarks as well. The stock image provider has cited images generated by its AI system with Getty’s watermark. The company says that such images can cause “consumer confusion.”
The report mentions that in its lawsuit, Getty has asked the court to order Stability to stop using its pictures. The company has also requested compensation in the form of monetary damages which will include the profits that Stabitly made from the alleged infringement.
