How Qatar took the lead
Ookla noted that in 2022, Qatar offered download speeds of up to 176.18 Mbps compared to the 98.10 Mbps speed recorded in 2021. The country that recently hosted the FIFA World Cup was able to take the top spot in mobile network speeds only because the local operators poured investment into improving 5G reach and speeds. The initiative was driven both by an eager transition to 5G as well as the desire to showcase their capabilities on the global stage with Qatar’s role as host of the FIFA World Cup.
In 2022, the GSMA reported that Qatar’s local market leader Ooredoo achieved 99.5% population coverage in the first quarter of last year.
