Global smartphone production decline by 11% since last year, here’s why – Times of India

The total number of smartphones manufactured globally by major companies like Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo has reportedly declined. According to a report by TrendForce, the global smartphone market during the period between July to September (the third quarter of 2022) has gone down by 11% compared to the numbers achieved in 2021. The report also claims that the quarterly number of smartphone production has also slightly decreased by 0.9%. In Q2 2022, the companies produced 307 million units while the number in Q3 2022 slid to 289 million smartphones, the report adds.
Why global smartphone production has declined
As per the report, one of the major reasons for the decline in global smartphone production is weak demand. The report also claims that instead of introducing new devices, the companies have prioritised their respective inventory. Moreover, the global economic conditions might have also forced the brands to lower their production targets, the report notes.

How the brands rank on the global smartphone production market
Apart from this, the report has also shared how the major brands have positioned themselves in the global smartphone production market. The report claims that Samsung was leading the quarter with 64.2 million units and a 22.2% market share. Apple has reportedly taken the second position in the phone production market with a 17.6% share and 50.8 million devices produced.
Following Apple and Samsung, Xiaomi has claimed the third spot with over 13% market share. Whereas, Chinese companies like Oppo and Vivo with 11.5% and 8.5%.

The report has also predicted the estimated market share that each brand is expected to maintain in the next quarter. Apple is expected to rule the global smartphone production market with a 24.6% share, the report notes. The Cupertino-based tech giant is likely to increase iPhone manufacturing in time for the holiday period.
Meanwhile, Samsung is expected to drop to the second position as the company will reportedly scale back production to push already manufactured devices. The South Korea-based tech giant is estimated to claim 20.4% of the smartphone production market. Meanwhile, the remaining Chinese smartphone makers are also likely to slow down device production in Q4 2022.
