Global TV market may have a new No. 2 – Times of India

The global TV market may have a new No. 2 — TCL. According to a report from Omdia, Chinese electronics company TCL may overtake LG to emerge as the second-largest TV maker in the world. The title for the biggest TV maker worldwide is held by South Korean electronics giant Samsung. The forecast is reportedly based on TCL’s plans to secure more panels for TVs than LG. As per the report, TCL’s forecasted number is higher than that of LG.
“According to market research firm Omdia and the industry on the 4th, this year’s plan to secure panels by major TV makers was Samsung Electronics‘ 55.6 million units, TCL’s 36.5 million units, and LG Electronics‘ 34.3 million units,” says the report in 9to5Google that quotes Omdia numbers.
The report also has a disclaimer that this may not necessarily translate to final shipments or sales. In 2021, TCL shipped 24.57 million TVs while LG’s number stood at 27.33 million. It further adds that LG is likely to still remain ahead in terms of revenue, as the company has a stronger focus on the high-end market compared to TCL’s. TCL relatively has a higher play on affordable models.
Earlier this year, TCL claimed that it is one of Google’s largest partners for Android TV OS devices — TVs running either the Google TV interface or those on the older Android TV experience. The company said that it has sold over 10 million TVs using Android TV or Google TV per year. TCL has also worked closely with the search giant to introduce new smart TV experience with Google TV. These include hands-free voice control with Google Assistant and a content-first home screen on its TVs.
