Google adds Android 13 media controls support for this app
Google is planning to update its fourth app with support for Android 13’s redesigned media controls in the upcoming weeks. Three first-party apps — YouTube Music, Google Podcasts and Chrome have already been redesigned by the tech giant and now the company has decided to upgrade the YouTube app on Android with the same design change.
According to a report by 9to5Google, YouTube for Android version 17.32.32 has currently entered the beta phase and targets API 33. The report mentions that users will notice the updated player mostly while casting videos. Moreover, this new change is also important for YouTube Premium subscribers that use background (audio-only) play, the report suggests.

Availability of YouTube’s Android 13 media controls
As mentioned above, YouTube version 17.32.32 with new controls UI is currently in the beta phase. However, the redesigned look is expected to be released in the stable channel in the upcoming weeks for all Android 13 users, the report claims. As per the report, other streaming apps like — Spotify or Pocket Casts are yet to be updated, but there’s still time before the consumer launch on Pixel phones.
How is the new YouTube design expected to look
The report claims that the change will be minimal for the main YouTube app compared to the other three apps. YouTube’s media player will not only get the rounded square pause/circular play button but will also receive a new progress bar that is likely to span the entire width of the screen.

Apart from this, another ‘next’ button will be available (which ‘back’ will be in the case of a playlist) on the right of the scrubber, while the ‘x’ button that closes a notification or quickly ends a Cast session will be removed from the platform.
The report states that the removal of the button is “unfortunate” as swiping will just remove the notification rather than ending what’s playing. Lastly, the more prominent play/pause button position is expected to cover more of the video title, the report adds.
