Google adds support for more languages for its Meet Live Captions feature

Google updated its video-calling platform — Google Meet — with the Live Captions feature in January. This handy feature makes Google Meet video calls more inclusive and collaborative by removing language proficiency barriers. This feature is particularly useful for meetings or training sessions between international teams. Google Meet’s Live Captions feature intends to improve meeting efficiency by ensuring that all participants are able to get the same information.
The tech giant has now updated its blog post to announce that Google Meet’s Live Captions feature will now support more language than it did initially. Earlier, meeting participants were able to use this feature to translate English meetings into French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish in real time. Now, Google Meet will be able to offer live translations of English meetings into Japanese, Mandarin (simplified), and Swedish along with the previous ones.
Google Meet Live Captions: Availability
The Live Captions feature in Google Meet is available only for select Google Workspace editions. This includes — Google Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Education Plus, and the Teaching and Learning Upgrade. All participants in a video meeting can enable the Live Captions feature only when the host is using any of the above-mentioned Google Workspace editions.

Google Meet Live Captions: How to enable
Google Meet’s Live Captions feature is available only on the web version of the video-calling platform. To turn it on, Meet users have to visit the Settings of the platform and choose the Captions option. Here, you can find the Translation Language option under the Live Captions segment where you can choose from the available languages.
Once enabled, this feature will show the translations in the selected language during Google Meet video meetings. Users who want to check the full list of supported languages can visit the Google Meet Help Center.
