Google announced the next iteration of Android, the Android 12, during the I/O 2021. After the announcement, Android 12 went through several rounds of developer previews, and beta builds. Now, Google has released the stable build of Android 12, but there’s a catch. The build released is for the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). However, the Google Pixel smartphones won’t be getting the update starting today. Google says that the Pixel smartphones will receive the Android 12 stable build in the next few weeks.
An exact date hasn’t been shared yet. But, when rolled out, it will be available for Pixel 3, Pixel 3A, Pixel 4, Pixel 4A, Pixel 4A 5G, Pixel 5, and Pixel 5A smartphones. Also, the upcoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will come with Android 12 preinstalled out of the box. Moreover, the Android 12 will also be coming to smartphones manufactured by Samsung, OnePlus, Oppo, Xiaomi, Realme, Tecno, and Vivo later in 2021.
“We’re putting the finishing touches on a special release with Pixel-exclusive and Pixel-first experiences on Android 12. This will roll out to Pixel users in the next few weeks,” a Google spokesperson told Android Central.
The Android 12 brings a major design overhaul to the Android ever seen with the Material You design language. The Material You allows developers to design apps that can adapt to the user’s choice. Google has updated most of its apps with Material You in the latest build of Android 12. Even widgets have a new and modern look. The second biggest update in the Android 12 is the focused privacy features. The Android 12 gets a new Privacy Dashboard. It also brings microphone and camera indicators to Android. Further, Google claims that Android 12 also improves the performance of devices. Google has invited developers to prepare their apps for the next version of Android.
Realme has announced that the Android 12 update will hit Realme GT phones first. Meanwhile, OnePlus has also rolled out Android 12 open beta to the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. Older OnePlus phones will get Android 12 in the coming months.
