Google announces largest ever grant to support fact checkers across the world: All the details – Times of India

Fake news and spreading a misinformation is a rather deadly trend across the world. There have been diligent fact checkers in several countries but they often end up facing fund crunch and their efforts are derailed. In a major boost to fact checkers across the world, Google and YouTube have announced a $13.2 million grant to the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) at the nonprofit Poynter Institute. This will help to launch a new Global Fact Check Fund to support their network of 135 fact-checking organisations from 65 countries covering over 80 languages. The Fund will open next year, said Google in a blog post.
How will the Fund help in checking fake news?
Google, in the blog post, said that the Global Fact Check Fund will help fact-checkers to scale existing operations or launch new ones that elevate information, uplift credible sources and reduce the harm of mis- and disinformation around the globe. “Fact-checking organisations can use the funding to incorporate new technologies, create or expand digital footprints, optimise verification tools, and increase their capacities to deepen audience engagement through innovative storytelling formats such as audio, video or podcasts,” said Google in the blog post.
Existing fact-checking features on Google, YouTube
Google says that it highlights relevant fact check articles in results in Search, News and Google Images to ensure users get the full context while they’re searching. Further, in six countries, Google has fact-check panels on YouTube that appear at the top of search results for queries related to a specific claim, helping provide viewers with additional context. Google says that it is working to roll them out in additional markets. Also, starting next year, YouTube will host a training series for fact-checking organisations interested in learning more about the platform and best practices for video content strategy and engagement, confirmed Google in the blog post.
