In 2020, Google added the ability to allow users to set themself as “Away” (empty circle) or “Do not disturb” (red). This gets the new An “Idle” orange bubble status now. The “Idle” bubble will appear if a user has been “inactive in Gmail or Google Chat for the last 5 minutes,” as per the company. The idle status is for now only available only on the web.
How to change your Status on Google Chat
On your laptop/PC, open Gmail.
At the top right, next to your status indicator, click the Down arrow.
Users can choose between: Automatic, Do not disturb, or Set as away.
How to set a Custom Status
Go to Google Chat or your Gmail account
From your status indicator at the top, click the Down arrow
Click Add a status
Follow the prompt to choose an emoji, write a status message, or end or clear a status.
