Google Chrome 96 update is rolling out, here’s what’s new
Google is back with yet another stable update for its Chrome web browser. The Chrome 96 update is now rolling out to all users across platforms, including PC and mobile. It brings a slew of new changes and improvements to the browsers.
Backwards-forward cache
The first change that Chrome 96 brings is support for backwards-forward cache for the desktop version. With this feature, Chrome will save some data from the frequently or recently visited websites to make navigating through them faster and easier and save some time. While the feature seems to be a plus for users who invest a lot of time browsing, this will definitely add some load to the RAM of your system.
Improved Progressive web apps
Progressive web apps (PWAs) is getting some improvements with the Chrome 96 update. Going forward, PWAs will have the option to register themselves as custom URL handlers. This change is intended to make PWAs more reliable than the web version of the desktop.
Apart from that the Chrome 96 also brings is a new site-wise dark theme mode. What this means is users will have the option to enable dark mode per-site basis. Another feature that is similar to the site-wise dark theme is the ability to set page zoom per website. With this users will be able to set custom zoom levels for different websites based on their preferences.
To enable the feature on Android, head to chrome: flags#enable-accessibility-page-zoom.
The Chrome 96 is a phased rollout and might take a while to reach every device depending upon the region.
