google: Google is shutting down YouTube app for these Android users – Times of India

Android Go is the operating system meant for low-end phones that don’t have too much RAM or a strong processor. Google, over the years, has launched many apps tailored for Android Go. However, now it is shutting down one of the most popular apps for Android Go.
Google has announced that starting August 2022, YouTube Go will be shut down for good. YouTube Go was launched in 2016, aimed at users in locations where connectivity, data prices, and low-end devices. “Since then, YouTube has invested in improvements to the main YouTube app that make it perform better in these environments, while also delivering a better user experience which is inclusive of our entire community,” said Google in its announcement post. Google further said that it has improved performance for entry-level devices or those that watch YouTube on slower networks.

What next for YouTube Go users?

Google recommends that YouTube Go users install the main YouTube app or visit youtube.com in their browsers. Compared to YouTube Go, the main YouTube app provides a better overall user experience as well as offers features that aren’t available on YouTube Go. For instance, YouTube Go users can’t comment, post, use dark mode or create content on the app. Now they can access all the missing features from YouTube Go on the main YouTube app.
Google also said that it is building out additional user controls that help to decrease mobile data usage for viewers with limited data. Google had earlier revealed that the YouTube Go had seen more than 500 million downloads, making it one of the most popular apps on the platform. Google redesigned the UI among other things for Android 12 Go last year in December.
