google: Google’s new Wear OS version may come to select smartwatches only for now: Report – Times of India

At its I/O developer’s conference this year, Google had announced a partnership with Samsung to develop a wearables platform that got the best of WearOS and Tizen together. The Wear OS update is called WearOS 3.0 and is being readied to be rolled out, but not to all the WearOS supported wearables. The WearOS 3.0 has been confirmed to arrive only on a few of Qulacomm’s chipsets for the time being, as per a report by XDA Developers.
For now, Qulacomm has reportedly confirmed that the Snapdragon Wear 4100+ and 4100 platforms are getting the WearOS 3.0 and that the Snapdragon 3100 is capable of supporting it but the company cannot discuss any specifics.
WearOS 3.0 is set to be the biggest upgrade for Google’s platform. The update is set to bring new fitness features, a revamped design and more to the platform. Since Google owns Fitbit, the smartwatch maker, along with Samsung would be packing in their upcoming smartwatches with the new OS.
Google, in response to a query by XDA Developers, said “User experience is a top priority for us. We have not confirmed eligibility or timeline on whether any Wear OS smartwatch will update to the new unified platform. There are many technical requirements in order to run the unified platform that ensures all components of the user experience are optimized.” So, for now, the only confirmation apart from the select Snapdragon platforms getting WearOS 3.0 is that the new smartwatches from Fitbit and Samsung could come powered with the new Wear OS. The old smartwatches may or may not get the update.
