Google has removed these features from KaiOS, which powers JioPhone

The Linux-based KaiOS that powers Reliance Jio’s most-affordable 4G LTE phone, JioPhone, has lost some key Google Assistant features. KaiOS is a popular OS that runs on ‘smart feature phones’ from several brands. As per a report in 9to5 Google, Google Assistant on KaiOS no longer supports the ability to send texts, make calls via voice command and more. This issue reportedly started in mid-April across a wide range of KaiOS devices, including those from Nokia. The company has now confirmed it after a user contacted Nokia for the same issue.
“Due to recent changes implemented by Google, feature phones running on KaiOS will experience limited functionality with Google Assistant. Calling and sending SMS messages to your contacts using Google Assistant are no longer supported. Other Google Assistant features currently work as normal,” says the company’s statement.
What has Google removed
Google has disabled its Assistant on KaiOS to call someone or send someone a message. Both these features were previously available for handsets running on KaiOS along with support for other features like turning up the volume, doing a Google search, opening an app and more. While all these features remain, KaiOS users will no longer be able to call someone or send someone a message using Google Assistant.
Why it will not matter to Google JioPhone Next buyers
In June, Reliance announced JioPhone Next, the company’s first phone in partnership with Google. While the phone succeeds the JioPhone, it will not run on KaiOS. The JioPhone Next will be the first handset in the JioPhone lineup to run on Android Go, an optimised version of Android OS for phones with less than 2GB RAM. The phone will support Google Play Store and users will be able to download Android apps. . Buyers are likely to get a touch screen display of around 5-inch with thick bezels on the bottom and top part.
Other than this, Reliance Jio hasn’t revealed much about the device, especially hardware specs it will offer. There is also no official information about the price of the phone. However, reports claim that the JioPhone Next may be priced around Rs 3,500.
