Google: How ex-employees of Google may be OpenAI’s ‘secret weapon’ – Times of India

ChatGPT quickly became a global sensation with its capabilities and was seen as a potential threat to Google’s search engine. However, recent developments in the space, such as the launch of Bard AI conversational service, have expanded the narrative from ‘being a threat to search’ to a more powerful AI tool that aims to make searching online a seamless experience.
Now it seems the success of OpenAI has some ‘Google hands’ behind it. According to a report in The Information, the seven-year-old startup hired a number of former Google researchers in the run up to ChatGPT release. “In the months leading up to ChatGPT’s release, OpenAI quietly hired at least five Google AI employees who were instrumental in tweaking the chatbot so it could be ready to launch in November,” The Information quoted a person with knowledge of the matter.

The report further notes that OpenAI continues to attract talent from Google. Last month, the startup reportedly hired a Google researcher who helped create a type of machine-learning model that Google has used for its search engine. The model was then used by OpenAI for ChatGPT.
Moreover, at least four other researchers from Google Brain, the company’s main AI group, have moved to OpenAI in recent weeks, the report claimed.

Bard vs ChatGPT
The success of ChatGPT, in addition to Microsoft’s multi-billion-dollar investment, reportedly forced Google to issue a “code red”. It is being claimed that the launch of the company’s AI conversational service Bard, which will be first introduced with Search and is currently being tested internally, was launched in response to ChatGPT’s success.
Microsoft also unveiled the ‘new’ Bing with an upgraded language model used by ChatGPT. The search engine with new AI capabilities is now available for limited preview. Microsoft also introduced Edge browser with AI capabilities. The company is calling the new Bing and Edge as users’ AI copilot for the web.
