Google introduces Health Connect, one-stop shop for all fitness, health apps
Smartwatch users would know that a lot of their fitness data, information and other metrics are stored in various apps. Often it can get tedious to open multiple apps to keep track of fitness information. Google is simplifying this by launching an all-new app called Health Connect. The company has partnered with Samsung on the app to build the new app.
What is Health Connect?
Google calls Health Connect a “platform that securely shares health and fitness data across Android devices, with user consent.” Made in collaboration with Samsung, the idea is to simplify the connectivity between apps while providing centralized privacy controls for users. Google said that it is giving “users a central place to manage their privacy settings with granular controls to see which apps have access to data at any given time.”
How will Health Connect app work?
Google says that the idea is to enable health and fitness apps to talk to each other, each app is able to provide a user with better, more holistic health insights. Earlier, developers had to work with multiple API connections to share data between different. As per Google, “each integration was costly to build and maintain, s limited developers’ data sharing capabilities and made it hard for users to unlock this data so that it could be utilised in different apps.
Android users will now be able to sync and get credit for their Peloton workouts in apps like Oura, MyFitnessPal, WeightWatchers and Lifesum.
How does the app benefit users?
Users had to hop and switch between multiple apps and give them all the data permissions, which can be a bit tedious. “With Health Connect, users can easily manage permissions in a single place, with granular controls to see which apps are accessing data at any given time,” said Google in a blog post.
Is the app already available?
The app has been launched in beta version only as of now. It is available on Google Play Store, which means it is only for Android users. Further, Google hasn’t revealed when the public version of the app will be rolled out.
