Google is notifying Canadian employees impacted by 12,000 job cuts announced last month – Times of India

Google announced last month that it will be laying off 12,000 employees globally. As a part of the job cut process, company employees working in Canada have been told that they have been laid off. The country arm has also confirmed the development.
The Financial Post quoted Google Canada spokesperson Lauren Skelly as saying that notifications were being sent to staff impacted by the job cuts announced last month. Skelly reportedly said that Canada remains an important and priority market for Google.
However, information about how many employees in the company’s Canada offices are due to be laid off and what departments are seeing the job cuts is not available. Reportedly, those who have been laid off include software engineers and user experience designers in Kitchener, Ontario.
Google has offices in Toronto, Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Vancouver, Ottawa, Montreal, and Edmonton.

DeepMind AI to shut Canada office
The news comes about two weeks after Bloomberg reported that Alphabet-owned DeepMind artificial intelligence (AI) unit reportedly said that it would close its offices in Canada. DeepMind has its office in Edmonton, Alberta and is the only DeepMind office not housed within a Google campus.
Citing a memo, the report also noted that the engineers and researchers who will be impacted will be offered the option to relocate to other offices.

“DeepMind has made the difficult decision to consolidate its Canadian offices and close the Edmonton office, while maintaining its other Canadian locations in Montréal and Toronto, which are within Google offices,” a statement from the Google parent company read.
Google cuts 12,000 jobs
Last month, Google announced that it would remove about 12,000 jobs or 6% of the company’s workforce. The employees impacted by the layoff included the ones working in departments such as Google Cloud, Chrome to Android, strategy, recruiting, go-to-market teams and the company’s in-house research and development (R&D) division called Area 120.
