Google is removing app permissions list from Play Store: How it will affect users – Times of India

Google Play Store includes a ‘Permissions’ section that details all the permissions needed by each app. This important section comes in handy for privacy-conscious users as it allows them to check all the permissions needed by a particular app without installing it on their devices. According to a report by XDA Developers, Google is now ditching the app permissions section on the Play Store to emphasise the newly introduced “Data Safety” section.
The “Data Safety” section on Google Play Store was introduced in April 2022 to offer users more information about how apps use their data. However, this new section is taking a toll on some “crucial details from app listings.” Moreover, Google has also removed the ‘Updated on’ section from Play Store listings for some users in March this year.
How the new app listings look
The report has shared two screenshots of the Play Store listing of the Facebook app showing the difference before and after the change came into effect. As per the screenshots, the ‘Permissions’ list is no longer visible in the updated listing barring users from checking the permissions before installing the app.
The reason for Google’s decision
The report didn’t mention the exact reason for Google to go ahead with such a change as the tech giant is yet to release an official statement regarding this update. However, the report speculates that this change is related to the new Play Store Data Safety section which is currently being rolled out to users.
The Data Safety section
The latest addition to the Play Store app listing, the Data Safety section, offers users information about how certain apps use their data. As per the report, the Permissions list is less important than the Data Safety section as it doesn’t explain the required permissions. However, users who have a fair understanding of Android app permissions can still access the information by using the Aurora Store, a FOSS Google Play Client, or by inspecting the app’s manifest, the report mentions.
