Google Maps tests a new feature for in-app directions

Google Maps tests a new feature for in-app directions

Google has recently released the latest beta version of Google Maps, version 11.28. Users are will get a refreshed and improved design. In the last few months, multiple changes have been included in Google Maps, however, a report by 9to5Google suggests that the tech giant has added another tool to the latest beta version of the app. This tool will allow users to find and toggle their preferred modes of travel.
The report also includes screenshots that show redesigned navigation and trip options interfaces. As per the report, some users were able to find these UI changes for months on the current stable version 11.27.2. This indicates that the feature is being tested on both alpha and beta versions of the apps.
The screenshots shared in the report offer a better view of the map as the route box visible on the top portion of the screen just floats on top of the map in the new version. The route box in the latest beta version of Google Maps is no longer present in a white, full-width pane. Moreover, the modal suggestions which used to appear just below the route box will now be available in a dedicated pane at the bottom of the display.
Earlier, another change that was being tested since February, has also been implemented in the present stable version. This change checks users to see the map while retrieving directions. However, the new change is related to the trip options menu that offers a preferred transportation mode panel. This preferred mode panel will allow users to prioritise the modes of travel that they would like to see first on the navigation pane which includes — driving, walking, biking, transit or vehicle hires. The settings of Google Assistant also currently include a similar panel which will assist in distributing directions.
The current version of Google Maps shows users the directions for the last selected travel mode by default. The mode will be set to driving by default if the user is opening the app for the first time on a new phone. Users who prefer public transport for commuting can also use the “Route options” selection from the triple-dot menu present near the routing box to filter down to specific modes that include — bus, train, tram and subway.
