The Pixel 7 has not yet arrived but a report about Google pressing on the development of the new Tensor chipset for the Pixel 8 has. The California-headquartered tech giant could be developing the new Tensor chip in collaboration with its ally Samsung, claims a report by GalaxyClub.
This rumoured Tensor chip would be the third in the generation as the Google Pixel 7 is supposed to ship with a new Tensor chipset. As per the report, this third Tensor chipset or the ‘Tensor 3’ carries the model number S5P9865 and is being tested on a developer board named Ripcurrent. The report does not divulge more about the third-generation chipset.
The Pixel 7’s Tensor chipset is reported to have the model number S5P9855, which is being tested on a developer board codenamed Cloudripper.
Google introduced Tensor, its first in-house chipset, with the Pixel 6 series. With the partnership with Samsung, Google may be trying to leverage the AI processing and performance capabilities the South Korean tech giant brings to the table. While Google’s current chipset may not be a match for the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset by Qualcomm, we expect to see more improvements with the Tensor chipset in the coming years.
Samsung’s own plans for a chipset
The report also mentions Samsung working on its own Exynos chipsets and says that the company may have the ‘Exynos 1380’, the successor to the Exynos 1280 (S5E8825), under development with the product code S5E8835. The South Korean tech giant may use this new chipset for its Galaxy A54 smartphone, as the 1280 processor powered the Galaxy A53, but that is just up for speculation now.
