Google may have some good news for these Android smartwatch users – Times of India

Google isn’t very active when it comes to its smartwatch operating system – Wear OS. However, Google has recently launched its first smartwatch – Pixel Watch – globally. With its launch, it seems that the company is also getting serious about Wear OS updates.
As per a new report, the company is planning to release Wear OS updates every year similar to Android updates. This means, other Wear OS smartwatches like Galaxy Watch 4 series and Watch 5 series will receive regular software updates.
Björn Kilburn, Director of Product Management for Wear OS, has mentioned to Wired in an interview that Google is planning to “release a new version of Wear generally every year in a similar fashion to mobile.” This clearly indicates regular updates for Wear OS devices, at least to the point they are supported.

Kilburn further mentioned to Wired, “If new functionalities added in Android are critical for watches […] then we’ve got to find a way to get it into the watch”.
According to the report, it is still unclear whether updating Wear OS meant a version update like jumping from Android 11 to Android 12 or Wear OS 3 to Wear OS 4 or minor updates like Wear OS 3 to 3.5.
However, Kilburn did mention that the updates will depend upon OEMs as they’ll have to push the updates over the air for devices that are running Wear OS 3 at the moment. Also, the update also depends upon supported years that companies usually claim with their devices. Also, if it is past that time period, it is possible the device may never receive an update.
