Google officially pulls the plug on the Hangouts app – Times of India

Google Hangouts, one of the most popular chat apps from the tech giant, has finally shut down. It doesn’t come as a surprise or shock as Google has the plan in motion for quite a few months now. Previously, Google had announced that “Hangouts is being upgraded to Google Chat at the end of 2022 for those who haven’t already upgraded.” That day was November 1, which means that the app has finally been laid to rest.
Google had also said that some people may have already moved to Google Chat and may no longer be able to use Google Hangouts on some platforms.
The tech giant had also said that the web app of Hangouts will also be unavailable from November 1, 2022. However, we did try to access the app and it was still available. Though it may be a matter of days when the web app also stops working.
What to do with your Hangouts data?
Google recommends that if users wish to keep their Hangouts data, then they have to use Google Takeout and download a copy before January 1, 2023, when Hangouts data will be deleted.
How to download Hangouts data?
Here are the steps you need to follow if you want to download your data from the Hangouts app:

  • Head to Google Takeout and sign in with the Google Account you use in Hangouts.
  • In the available applications, select Hangouts and deselect the rest.
  • Click Next Step.
  • In the Delivery method, choose how often you want to download the backup. Since Hangouts is being upgraded to Google Chat soon, we recommend a one-time download.
  • Choose the file type.
  • Click Export.
  • A message tells you that Google is creating a copy of files from Hangouts. You will receive an email when the takeout process is complete. Download the file to preserve your Hangouts data.
