Google recently added the Energy Saver mode to Chrome web browser. As a part of it, the company has made several optimisations to the browser for Mac that helps it to offer improved battery life on Mac devices. According to the report 9to5Google, the company has made four optimisations and that allows the browser to offer battery life as good as Safari on Mac.
As per the report, Google ran the test on MacBook Pro 13-inch model running M2 chipset, 8GB RAM and macOS Ventura 13.2.1 with Chrome version 110.0.5481.100. The result showcased that the browser can manage to last for around 17 hours for browsing and 18 hours while watching YouTube videos.
In comparison with Safari, Apple claims up to 17 hours of wireless web browsing and up to 20 hours of Apple TV app playback time on battery.
According to the report, Google has used an open-source benchmarking suite to run these tests and has confirmed that users will notice the battery life improvement over the previous models.

Eliminating unnecessary redraws: Google has modified Chrome to identify Document Object Model (DOM) changes patterns that don’t affect pixels on the screen early and bypass unnecessary style, layout, paint, raster and gpu steps. Apart from this, the company has also implemented something similar to Chrome UI.
Fine tuning iframes: Google has also fine-tuned the garbage collection and memory compression heuristics for recently created iframes. As a result Chrome is supposed to consume less energy.
Tweaking timers: According to the report, Javascript timers consume power. Google has tweaked Chrome to wake up CPU less often to preserve power.
Streamlining data structures: Google has also optimised the access pattern for data structure where frequent accesses were there with the same key.
