We first heard about Google being in talks to bring free ad-supported TV content to Google TV a few months ago, and it looks like those discussions have resulted in a variety of new content officially coming to the platform.
Google announced in a blog post yesterday (h/t: XDA-Developers and Protocol) that it’s teamed up with Pluto TV to bring over 300 free TV channels to devices running the Google TV platform. The new channels will reportedly appear in the “live” tab on the Google TV home screen.
Pluto TV offers a variety of ad-supported online channels, such as CBS News, CNN, Comedy Central, Paramount Plus Picks, and Showtime Selects. It also offers curated channels devoted to the likes of the 007 franchise, Baywatch, Star Trek, Degrassi, The Price Is Right, and genre-specific channels (action, documentary, etc). The service is limited to Europe, Latin America, and the US right now.
“This new integration with Pluto TV will be available on all Google TV devices in the coming weeks,” Google noted in its blog post. So you might want to sit tight and wait if it’s not available on your device right now.
The Mountain View company is also offering a couple more Google TV perks, such as six months of free Peacock Premium in the US and a variety of ad-supported movies on YouTube. If that’s not enough, the firm says it’s planning to offer more ways to watch content for free in 2022.
