Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro screen and camera specifications

Folks at 9to5Google have decompiled the Google Camera 8.3 APK which is rolling out as a part of the Android 12 Beta 3 operating system. The new camera APK has revealed a few details regarding the display, rear cameras, and the front camera of the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro. Here is what they have discovered.

Pixel 6 could have FHD+ resolution and Pixel 6 Pro could have QHD+ resolution

The code for the Google Camera 8.3 APK mentions the location where the front-facing camera of the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro should be located. According to it, the selfie camera of the Pixel 6 should be located 540 pixels from the left edge of the screen, whereas, the selfie camera of the Pixel 6 Pro should be located 722 pixels from the left edge of the screen.

Now, the renders of the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro show that both phones will have a selfie camera located in a punch-hole mounted at the top-centre portion of the screen. So, it means that the screen of the Pixel 6 has 540 pixels to the left side of the camera and 540 pixels to the right side of the camera. If you do the math (540 pixels + 540 pixels), the Pixel 6 will have a screen with 1080 pixels resolution. In other words, the display of the Pixel 6 will have FHD+ resolution. Similarly, the screen of the Pixel 6 Pro will have QHD+ resolution.

That’s not all, the code also reveals that the punch-hole cutout in the screen of the Pixel 6 will be 55 pixels in diameter, which is slightly smaller than 65 pixels punch-hole cutout in the display of the Pixel 5. The Pixel 6 Pro, on the other hand, is said to have a screen with a punch-hole cutout of 70 pixels, which is slightly larger than that of the Pixel 5.

Pixel 6 Pro could be able to record 4K videos with the front camera

9to5Google dug deeper to find out why does the screen of the Pixel 6 Pro has a larger punch-hole. They found that the phone has a special feature called “p21_front_setup,” which isn’t available in the Pixel 6. It hints that the Pixel 6 Pro has a different camera sensor and/or additional features compared to the Pixel 6. Based on this discovery, they think that the selfie camera of the Pixel 6 Pro can record 4K videos. However, there is no proof backing this speculation.

There could be a front-facing LED flash

The teardown of the Google Camera 8.3 APK reveals that the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro will have a feature called “front torch.” It suggests that both the Pixel 6 smartphones will have an LED flash for the front-facing camera. Could the term “front torch” indicate a screen flash feature like the one we see in the Google Pixel 5? Well, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Because the code for the Google Pixel 5 doesn’t mention the term “front torch.”

Pixel 6 series might offer 7x zoom while recording 4K/60fps videos

According to the code of the Google Camera 8.3 APK, the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro will offer up to 7x zooming capability while recording videos in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. In comparison, the Google Pixel 5 offers only 3x zoom while recording video in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. It also offers 5x zoom but only in 4K/30fps video recording mode.

Pixel 6 Pro might come with a 5x telephoto camera

XDA Developers also did some digging into the latest Google Camera APK. They found that it mentions the term “ultratele.” This term hints that the Pixel 6 series has could have a telephoto camera. Rumours that we have so far, suggest that the Pixel 6 Pro will come with a telephoto camera featuring 5x optical zoom. The latest discovery strengthens those rumours.

Pixel 6 series might miss out on Super Res Zoom

The Google Camera 8.3 APK has the “SABRE_ALLOWED” function disabled for the Pixel 6 series. This feature is related to the popular Super Res Zoom feature that we find in the Google Pixel 5 smartphones. Super Res Zoom adds details into the photos using machine learning which makes the images appear as if they were taken with a telephoto lens. Maybe Google is disabling this feature because Pixel 6 smartphones will have a telephoto camera. There is no concrete information at the moment.
