Google Pixel 7 will have Face Unlock, eSIM MEP

TL;DR

  • The Google Pixel 7 will have Face Unlock support, according to the Google Play Console.
  • This would be the first Pixel phone with Face Unlock since the Pixel 4 series.
  • Additionally, the phones support eSIM MEP, which allows for two eSIM profiles simultaneously.

We’re a week away from the launch of the Google Pixel 7 series, which means leaks are ramping up hard. By the time we get to the launch itself, we expect to know everything there is to know about the phones.

Case in point, today we learned (via Mishaal Rahman’s Reddit account) that the Pixel 7 will have two pretty exciting features. This information comes from the Google Play Console, so it is probably the strongest leak you can get without Google itself confirming it.

First, the Google Pixel 7 will have Face Unlock support. This will be a secure version of Face Unlock, so it will enable you to securely unlock your phone. This is the first time since the Pixel 4 series that we’ve seen this feature on a Pixel. In fact, the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are the only Pixels to date with Face Unlock.

The question, though, is how far this feature could extend. We know it will allow you to unlock the phone, but can you use it for NFC payment authentication or security checks within apps? That’s not too clear as of yet. However, we would assume this is not the case considering we know the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will only have one selfie camera on the front. Generally, you need two sensors to produce an accurate and secure 3D rendering of someone’s face, which is why the Pixel 4 and 4 XL went all-in on Face Unlock. We’ll need to wait and see how this pans out.

In addition to Pixel 7 Face Unlock, the Play Console confirms the Pixel 7 will support eSIM MEP. This is a system that allows for two different eSIMs at the same time. In other words, you could have an eSIM connected to Verizon and an eSIM connected to T-Mobile on the same phone at the same time.

Google will formally launch the Pixel 7 series on October 6. Stay tuned!
