The Google Pixel 8 could feature a 50MP ISOCELL GN2, which will offer a new feature known as Staggered HDR functionality which offers better dynamic range.

Google’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 lineup uses different Samsung components such as the ISOCELL GN1 camera sensors, OLED panel, and co-developed processors. Continuing that relationship, Google could use an upgraded Samsung camera sensor on the Pixel 8 series.

Google Pixel 8 camera (expected)

It is believed that the Google Pixel 8 lineup may offer the Staggered HDR functionality via the ISOCELL GN2, which is said to provide a more dynamic range. The 50MP ISOCELL GN2 is a 1/1.12-inch sensor, while the ISOCELL GN1’ has a 1/1.31-inch sensor.

According to developer Kuba Wojciechowski, the Google Camera Go app now supports the Staggered HDR feature, and this indicates that the camera will be getting the aforementioned upgrade.

How will the new Samsung lens in the Google Pixel 8 work?

Samsung’s HDR algorithm works by taking three frames, including a short-exposure frame, a medium-exposure frame, and a long-exposure frame. The three frames are merged into a single HDR image.

According to Samsung, the ISOCELL GN2’s Staggered HDR offers a wide dynamic range, and the sensor offers 24% more power efficiency. The sensor also offers a new mechanism for autofocus, known as Dual Pixel Pro.
