Google reveals WearOS 3 plans, rollout timeline and eligible Android smartwatches – Times of India
Google has finally revealed the name of its upcoming operating system for wearable devices. It will be called WearOS 3. The WearOS 3 will be a result of the combined efforts of Google’s Wear OS 3 and Samsung Tizen software. Google announced the same at its developers event Google I/O 2021 in May this year.
“We’re combining the best of @wearosbygoogle and @SamsungMobile
Tizen into a unified wearable platform. ⌚ Apps will start faster, battery life will be longer and you’ll have more choice than ever before, from devices to apps and watch faces. #GoogleIO.” Google said in a tweet then.
The search giant has now revealed more details about the OS for wearable devices. Revealing the timeline for Wear OS 3, Google said that the updates will start rolling out to select smartwatches in the “second half of 2022.” It further said that for the previous generation of Wear OS smartwatches, a system update to Wear OS 3 will be rolled out.
The OS “will bring the benefit of many of the new experiences, and in some limited cases, the user experience will also be impacted,” said the post. Google has kept the system upgrade on an opt-in basis for eligible devices. This means that not everyone will have to upgrade their devices to Wear OS 3. “We will provide more details in advance of the update so you can make an informed decision” said the post
Wear OS 3 rollout plan
According to Google, partner OEMs are expected to be able to roll out the system update starting in mid to second half of 2022.
Eligible devices for Wear OS 3
Wear OS devices that will be eligible for upgrade include Mobvoi’s TicWatch Pro 3 GPS, TicWatch Pro 3 Cellular/LTE, TicWatch E3 and follow on TicWatch devices. Apart from this, Fossil Group’s new generation of devices launching later this year will also be eligible.
Galaxy Watch 4 expected to be first watch to run on Wear OS 3
At its Galaxy Unpacked event 2021, Samsung is set to launch a bunch of new products. One of them that everyone is really looking forward to is the Galaxy wearable smartwatch — allegedly called the Galaxy Watch 4 series — as that will be the first device that is going to be a forerunner of the Google-Samsung tie-up for future Android-powered wearables.
To recall, Samsung and Google have partnered together to create the OS for the upcoming smartwatches, but as per the latest tipped information, that’s not going to be all.
