Google scraps base Pixel Tablet in favor of “Pro” version

Over the past couple of years, Google has developed a penchant for teasing its products well in advance. The last example was back in October, when the company showcased its upcoming Pixel Tablet alongside the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.

Three months later, we are as confused as ever when it comes to the Pixel Tablet. What initially seemed like a mid-range device with smart-display functionality in mind, has quickly evolved into a lineup consisting of 2 models. Nevertheless, now it seems, we might be getting a single Pixel Tablet in the end.

According to software developer Kuba Wojciechowski, one of the two versions of the Pixel Tablet has been canceled. The information was posted on his Twitter account, where he also shared additional details about Google’s upcoming tablet.

For reference, Wojciechowski was the person who previously brought to light the fact that Google was working on two Pixel Tablet models in the first place: “tangor”, powered by the original Tensor SoC, and “tangorpro”, powered by Tensor G2.

What was presumed to be the vanilla model, however, has since been canceled, with only tangorpro remaining. This means we will likely be getting a single Pixel Tablet – one powered by the Tensor G2 and possibly marketed as a “Pro” device…. Whatever that means.

According to Wojciechowski, the Pixel Tablet will come equipped with 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage and 2560×1600 LED display. This, coupled with the fact that the device will presumably come with a charging dock by default, means that the Pixel Tablet could potentially be a rather expensive device.

By the looks of it, Google’s vision for its tablet is increasingly conforming to industry norms. While this is not a particularly bad thing per se, it means that the device could end up being just another Android tablet in a sea of lookalikes.

Lastly, Wojciechowski posted a couple of additional images of the Pixel Tablet, showcasing the design of the device.
