The company has started beta testing digital driver’s licence and state ID card support, starting with Maryland. As per a report by The Verge, when adding a new card to the Google Wallet app, users will see a new option for “ID Card (beta)” after turning on Bluetooth and nearby devices.
According to 9to5google, if you meet the above mentioned requirements, “ID Card (Beta)” will be listed alongside payment cards, transit passes, loyalty cards, and gift cards in Google Wallet’s “Add to Wallet” list. Google Wallet for Android highlights three features with support for state identification cards or driver’s licences:
- Simply: tap, review, and confirm at the
TSA checkpoint to proceed. - Private: You decide how much of your ID can be shared and who can view it.
- Secure: Only you have access to your ID because it is saved on your device and securely encrypted.
How to use the feature
Here’s how users can use the new feature:
- Open the Google Wallet app on an Android device.
- Scroll down to the ID or licence option.
- Tap on your ID or licence.
- Scan the QR code available on your ID.
- Review the details.
- The app will ask you to authenticate before letting you continue.
- Wait for the blue check mark to confirm that the information was shared.
Google emphasises that digital IDs are saved locally on a user’s phone and can only be saved on one device when it comes to privacy. The app, or myaccount.google.com > Personal Info > Digital ID > Manage > Delete, can be used to remove it at any time. However, users won’t be able to access the digital ID if they are offline for longer than 30 days in a row.
As per the 9to5google report, this feature was revealed during Google’s annual developers conference I/O keynote in May. During the presentation, a slide showed US State Maryland as the first state for testing this upcoming feature.
