Contextual translation
“Soon, Translate will give you more contextual translation options with examples in the intended, translated language,” the company said. For example, if you are searching ‘Bat’, Google Translate will use AI to understand whether you are asking about “Bat” (animal) or “Bat” (Cricket equipment) and use the right turns of phrase, local idioms, or appropriate words depending on users’ intent.
This contextual translation will be available in English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish in the coming weeks.
Fresh look on iPhones
Google also announced that the Translate app on iPhones will get a new look in a few weeks. The new design will offer a larger canvas for typing and more accessible entry points for translating conversations, voice input, and Lens camera translation.
Other features include new gestures, better readability and on-device language expansion.
New gestures: New gestures will make Translate more accessible on iPhones. They will enable users to select a language with fewer taps, holding the language button to quickly pick a recently used language with a swipe, and swiping down on the home screen text area to quickly bring up your recent translations.
More readable: Translation results will be displayed in a dynamic font that automatically adjusts as text is typed in. There will also be alternate translations and dictionary definitions (when available) to explore different meanings of the words.
On-device language expansion: Google announced that 33 additional languages are now also available on-device in the Translate app. These downloaded languages will help users translate words and sentences when there is no or low network connectivity.
Image translation expansion
Google also announced that it will soon expand web image translation to give users more options for translating image-based content. The AI and advanced machine learning models will blend translated text into complex images, while maintaining the nuance and detail of the background image.
