Here’s what Elon Musk has to say on content moderation council, reinstating Trump’s Twitter account – Times of India

Elon Musk recently welcomed the US former president Donald Trump back on the micro-blogging website. Due to this decision, the company’s new boss has been getting a lot of flak. He justified the reinstatement by saying that it was done based on a poll on the platform. Musk has now come up with another reason for removing the ban on Trump’s Twitter handle.
The whole “reasoning conversation” started when Musk replied to a tweet by journalist Kyle Becker saying that under his leadership, Twitter has not banned anyone even for “utter lies.” “There is not one permanent ban on even the most far-left account spouting utter lies.” He also noted that Associated Press (AP), which did a “completely fictional report on Russian missiles hitting Poland,” is still active on the platform.

For those unaware, the AP report quoted an anonymous US intelligence official claiming that “Russian missiles” had struck the village of Przewodow. Later, after it was found that report was not correct and it was a Ukrainian S-300 air defence missile that was “Russian-made and most likely fired by Ukraine in defence against a Russian attack.” The news agency then fired the reporter involved.
To his “completely fictional” expression, journalist Patrick Watson shared a screenshot of Musk’s tweet which said that no account reinstatements would be done until a content moderation council is formed. The journalist implied that Musk has already reinstated Trump’s handle but the council is yet to be convened.
Even the account of artist Kanye West was back online. West’s handle was banned for his antisemitic tweets.
Musk replied to Watson saying that his reinstatement stance was based on a condition with “a large coalition of political/social activist groups” that agreed not to “starve Twitter of advertising revenue.” He claimed that the coalition “broke the deal” – essentially blaming activists for the reason for the reinstatement of Trump’s handle.

Activities “are destroying free speech in America”
This is not the first time Musk has blamed activists for Twitter’s problems. Earlier this month, Twitter’s new owner said the company has seen a “massive” drop in revenue because activist groups are pressuring advertisers “even though nothing has changed with content moderation. They’re trying to destroy free speech in America.” As per Reuters, digital ad sales account for about 90% of Twitter’s revenue.
