Xiaomi was recently accused of app throttling by the co-founder of benchmarking platform Geekbench, John Poole. According to him, the Xiaomi Mi 11 smartphone has been found to be manipulating the performance of some apps. In a series of tweets, Poole claimed that he found the Xiaomi Mi model to be throttling the performance of apps. In the tweets, Poole claims that he installed both the original Geekbench app and a fake one disguised as Fortnite on the smartphone. “Single-core scores are 30% lower, and multi-core scores are 15% lower, in the Fortnite build.” Poole wrote.
Poole further added, “This also happens when Geekbench is disguised as other games such as Genshin Impact.”. Poole believed that Xiaomi is also making performance decisions based on app identifiers.
Until now Xiaomi had not issued a public statement regarding this issue. However, HardwareInfo claims that it has received a statement from Xiaomi. According to Xiaomi, the difference in performance was due to the temperature management strategies.

Similar explanations were also issued by Samsung and OnePlus when their smartphones were found manipulating the performance of apps.
What is app performance throttling?
App performance throttling means deliberately reducing the performance of a particular app. The aim of the throttling performance of apps on a smartphone is to boost the gaming performance and battery life. It also reduces the risk of the smartphone getting overheated. In the reported cases, smartphone brands Samsung and OnePlus were caught deliberately restricting the performance of the popular apps on Google Play Store such as Google, Chrome, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Netflix, Zoom and several others.
Axing the performance of downloaded apps automatically helps smartphones to improve the functionality of the native apps. It also helps to avoid any lags that users may experience while scrolling through the device’s user interface.
