Here’s why Google needs to offer better software support for its own smartphones – Times of India

Oppo recently started rolling out its latest ColorOS 13 based on the Android 13 operating system to its smartphones. The company has revealed that it will support its smartphones with up to four years of Android updates and five years of security updates which puts it in line with Samsung and better than what Google actually offers for its Pixel smartphones.
However, there’s a catch. Oppo will be offering this four-year Android updates and five years of security updates only for their premium smartphones like the Reno and Find series. But, Oppo isn’t alone, Samsung is already offering its smartphones up to four years of Android updates and five years of security updates. OnePlus is also on the same page in terms of offering software updates.
However, Google is lagging behind as it only offers three Android updates and five years of security updates for its Pixel smartphones. Which is a whole year less of software support than what other smartphone makers are offering.
Why Google should address this problem
Google Pixel devices are one of the best camera smartphones you can buy. They are also really good as a smartphone that includes its clean user interface, no ads, no bloatware and performance. Despite all this, there’s one thing that makes the Pixel devices a little less attractive of a package and that’s software support.
Android is Google’s operating system and we expect it to offer more at least similar to what others are offering. Somewhat similar to Apple which makes both the hardware and software — iPhone and iOS and it supports its smartphone for a minimum of five years.
Given other Android OEMs getting aggressive with Android update support, Google should address this with their Pixel smartphones.
