TL;DR

  • Honor is making a play for the premium smartphone market with the Magic 4 Pro.
  • The new phone has high-end features along with a high-end price tag.
  • The phone is available for pre-order in the UK beginning May 13, with new markets coming in the near future.

Honor has unveiled a new premium smartphone, the Honor Magic 4 Pro, and it has the price tag to match.

Honor is the smartphone brand originally owned by Huawei and aimed at the affordable phone market. The brand competed with low-cost and entry-level Android devices, unlike Huawei’s premium line. Honor is now dipping its toe into the premium market, launching the Honor Magic 4 Pro in the UK for £949 (~$1,162).

In line with its premium status, the Magic 4 Pro is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The phone includes 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which is a pretty good spec sheet.

The phone sports a tri-camera arrangement that includes a 50MP wide camera, a 50MP ultrawide camera, and a 64MP periscope telephoto lens. All three lenses are powered by the company’s Ultra-Fusion Computational Photography, which helps the cameras achieve high-definition clarity even when images are taken from some distance. Unlike many phones, which have an off-center camera bump, all three cameras are placed within a single circular cutout, centered on the back of the phone. Honor calls this layout “The Eye of Muse.”

In terms of appearance, the Magic 4 Pro features a 6.81-inch LTPO quad-curved display and ultra-thin bezels. Between LTPO and Honor’s MotionSync technology, the screen has an adaptive refresh rate ranging from 1 to 120Hz.

The phone’s battery is 4,600mAh and is paired with the company’s SuperCharge technology. With a 100W wired SuperCharge, the phone can be charged 100% in just 30 minutes. The phone also supports 100W wireless SuperCharge, providing a 50% charge in just 15 minutes.

Since Huawei was forced to sell off the brand as a result of pressure from the US and its allies over national security concerns, Honor is no longer restricted to the role it played within Huawei’s ecosystem of products and services. Unshackled from being simply a budget line of phones, Honor clearly has its sights set on the premium market. With the Magic 4 Pro, the company has come out swinging.

The phone will be available for pre-order in the UK beginning May 13 and will expand to other markets in the near future.
