How Apple may bring the ‘hottest’ feature of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 to future iPhones – Times of India

Apple is reportedly planning to include an in-display Face ID sensor for its future iPhones, instead of bringing back the Touch ID, which has been claimed since 2019. This was claimed by Mark Gurman, who has been fairly accurate about Apple leaks and rumours. According to him, Apple has a “long-term goal” to include the Face ID sensor inside the display.
He claimed that even though Apple has tested in-screen Touch ID for the next flagship iPhones, it won’t make the cut this year. “I believe Apple is all-in on Face ID for its higher-end iPhones and its long-term goal is to implement Face ID in the display itself,” said Gurman.
It is believed that the in-display Face ID could be on the lines of what Samsung has most recently done with the front-facing camera in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3.
Samsung’s in-display front camera
Unlike the traditional smartphones that have sported a notch or punch hole for the selfie camera, the main display of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is smooth as the camera is placed underneath the display screen. This ensures that you can use the entire screen area. This is Samsung’s first phone to come with an under-display camera. The under-display camera has a 4MP sensor and an aperture of F/1.8.
The concept is similar to an in-display fingerprint scanner in terms of usage. With minimum pixels applied on top of the camera hole, Samsung is offering this technology.
Galaxy Z Fold 3’s foldable panel still comes with an Infinity-O cutout. However, you can see the cutout when the display is sleeping.
Chinese tech giants not far behind
Earlier this year, Xiaomi launched its Mi Mix flagship phone in China which is the company’s first commercial phone to come with a camera placed under the display. Earlier this month, BBK-owned consumer technology brand Oppo also exhibited its latest under-screen camera technology which, it claims can be used to place the selfie camera beneath the display ‘without compromising the integrity of the screen’. ZTE has also launched ZTE Axon 20 and ZTE Axon 30 with an under-screen camera for front facing camera.
