How iPhone 14’s Emergency SOS via satellite feature helped save a car that fell into the valley

The life-saving feature of the iPhone 14’s — the Emergency SOS via satellite and car crash detection — has been proving helpful for both users and first responders. While we have seen a number of incidents where car crash detection saved the lives of many, in recent, there have been occurrences when the Emergency SOS of iPhone 14 saved the lives of those in grave danger.
A car with two passengers drove off the Los Angeles highway, and one of the two had an iPhone 14 that registered the crash. Although the passengers were able to get out of the car but were stranded 300 feet into a valley, there was no cell reception, but the Emergency SOS via satellite feature of iPhone 14 kicked in soon after registering the crash, connecting victims to the first responders.
Sends SOS from 300-feet deep valley
With the Emergency SOS via satellite, the victim with iPhone 14 sent a text message to the relay center. Then the center contacted the local station of the Montrose Search and Rescue team, dispatching fire units, patrol, and Air Rescue 5 team of Special Enforcement Bureau – LASD.
The Montrose Search and Rescue team notes that the relay center provided them with accurate latitude and longitude of the victims, leading to a successful air rescue of two victims, a male and female in their 20s with mild to moderate injuries, to a nearby hospital.
This is the first occurrence of two features – car crash detection and Emergency SOS via satellite – working in tandem. Besides explicitly using the Emergency SOS, car crash detection makes use of the Emergency SOS via satellite to communicate to first responders in the case of no cellular and WiFi network, but satellite connectivity is accessible.
The first reported use of iPhone 14’s Emergency SOS via satellite was in Alaska, where a stranded snowmobiler was rescued from an isolated area.
The Emergency SOS via satellite was first introduced in the US and Canada, and recently the feature was rolled out for iPhone 14 users in the UK, France, Germany, and Ireland.
