How Samsung may ‘help’ Google in taking on Apple, OnePlus, others – Times of India

There has been a buzz about Google Pixel phones like never before. The Sundar Pichai-led company announced that its Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro phones will be powered by its own Tensor chipset. A report by Nikkei suggests that Samsung could be handling the production of the chipsets.
The report says that the tensor chips based on 5nm fabrication process, the same used by Samsung for its own Exynos 2100 chips. Although Google hasn’t disclosed who will make the Tensor chip, sources, as per the Nikkei report, said that Samsung could be handling the production.
Neither Samsung nor Google have commented on the matter. However, the report says that very companies in the world have the capacity or the track record to manage such a large chipset order. Also, it is likely that Google could base the Tensor chip on the 5nm fabrication process as the Pixel 5 runs on Snapdragon 765G, which is based on a 7nm process.
Having a chipset that is based on 5nm process will probably put it at par with Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 — the most commonly used chipset in premium Android phones. OnePlus, Xiaomi and others all have smartphones that are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor. Apple has its own A14 Bionic chip which is also based on a 5nm process.
On the Tensor chipset, Google said that it has designed the silicon chipset make Pixel even more capable. “For example, with Tensor we thought about every piece of the chip and customised it to run Google’s computational photography models. For users, this means entirely new features, plus improvements to existing ones,” the company said.
Further it said that, “Tensor enables us to make the Google phones we’ve always envisioned — phones that keep getting better, while tapping the most powerful parts of Google, all in a highly personalised experience.”
