How to check if your Android smartphone supports it
RCS (Rich Communication Service) is the next, more advanced text messaging service after SMS. It comes with several features like read receipts, support for high quality images, typing indicators etc. and is billed as the successor to the SMS. With the help of RCS, Android users can chat in a way similar to WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or any instant messaging service. However, to make RCS work, it is not just the phone that needs to have the capability but also your network provider and your phone’s operating system.
In this article, we will tell you how to check if your Android device has support for RCS (Apple doesn’t support RCS; it has iMessages). Google’s Messages app supports RCS along with some other pre-installed Android messaging apps. We will be using the Messages app as a model for this article.
Here are the steps:
Open Google’s Messages app on your Android device and make it the default messaging app if it is not already.
Now, tap the vertical ellipsis icon which is there in the top-right corner.
From the drop-down menu that appears, choose ‘Settings’.
Check for a section titled ‘Chat Features’ at the top of the Settings menu. If you can see the section, you have RCS. Then, select it. Google uses the term ‘Chat’ for the RCS features.
You can go to ‘Chat Features’ settings to enable or disable several of the RCS features. If you want, you can even turn them off.
