How to enable Portrait mode for FaceTime calls to blur the background

In a work from home scenario, which is usually the case these days due to coronavirus pandemic and once again rising numbers of Omicron cases across the globe, it must have happened to you when your boss or a colleague wanted to quickly have a video chat over FaceTime to discuss something important.

But that’s the moment, you start preparing yourself to look presentable, and usually don’t get that much to do that same for the room you’re working in.

It’s now only about work, it can also be your regular friends or family calls or it can simply be things that you don’t want others to see on a video call.

So, if you are supposed to make a video call over FaceTime and don’t want to show the mess around your room, FaceTime now allows you to blur the background.

With iOS 15, iPad OS 15 or macOS Monterey, Apple has added a background blur feature to hide the backdrop and here’s how to do it.

Pre-requisites:
Supported Apple device: To use the background blur feature, you will need a compatible Apple device. Here’s list:

  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone 11series
  • iPhone SE (2nd generation)
  • iPhone 12 series
  • iPhone 13 series
  • iPad mini (5th-generation) or later
  • iPad (8th-generation) or later
  • iPad Air 3rd-generation or newer
  • 11-inch iPad Pro
  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd-generation) or later
  • iOS 15, iPad OS 15 and macOS Monterey is mandatory.

Now, there are two ways you can enable the background blur feature — before starting the call and during an ongoing call.

Method 1: Before starting the FaceTime call

1.

Open FaceTime on your device and open Control Center

On Mac: Click on Control Centre icon
On iPhone and iPad: Swipe down from the top right corner

2.

Look for Video Effects and tap/click on it

3.

Choose Portrait option below the FaceTime to enable it

Method 2: During an ongoing FaceTime call
To do this you need to open the Control Center again and choose Video Effects during an ongoing call. Choose the Portrait option below FaceTime to enable it. Alternatively, you can also tap/click on your title from the ongoing call screen and tap on Portrait mode to enable it.
