How to play YouTube videos with your smartphone screen turned off – Times of India

YouTube was among the most downloaded entertainment apps in 2022 worldwide, with 154 million downloads from global users. Furthermore, YouTube says it has over 2 billion monthly logged-in users, people in over 100 countries access YouTube across 80 languages and more than 500 hours of content is uploaded every minute on the platform.
According to market and consumer data platform Statista, India is the leading country in terms of audience size with 467 million users. YouTube also surpassed 80 million Music and Premium subscribers globally, including those in trials, in September 2022. It is to be noted that this is a 30 million member increase from the 50 million announced in 2021.

This data suggests that there may be a lot of users who are not using the paid version and are missing out on several features. One of the highlighting features is the ability to play videos in the background.
Furthermore, the subscription allows users to keep playing a video even if the app is minimised. Here are the two ways you can play YouTube videos even when your screen is turned off.
Play YouTube videos in background via Premium subscription

  1. Open the YouTube app on your Android or iOS smartphone.
  2. Play a video that you like and turn off the screen.
  3. The video will keep playing.
  4. YouTube also allows you to minimise the app and the video will keep playing in a floating window.

Play YouTube videos in background without Premium subscription
While YouTube Premium brings the ability to watch videos in background by default, there is another workaround to do that. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Open any web browser on your smartphone and type in YouTube.com for web version
  2. Search for the video you want to listen to in the background
  3. Once the video starts playing, switch to desktop mode and wait till the video starts playing
  4. Minimise the browser which will pause the video.
  5. If you are using an Android phone, swipe down the notification panel and tap the ‘Play’ button from the playback notification
  6. Those on iOS and iPadOS, open the control centre and tap on the Play button on the music widget.
  7. The video playback will resume in the background.

Conclusion: In order to get a seamless expereince, users are advised to purchase a subscription. There are multiple YouTube Premium plans to choose from. The regular plan is priced at Rs 129 per month, a quarterly plan can be subscribed at Rs 399, and there is an annual at Rs 1290.
In case you have multiple members using the app, you can subscribe to a Family Plan priced at Rs 189 per month. YouTube Premium also has a student plan of Rs 79 per month.
