How to track heart rate using camera on Android and iOS smartphones

Last month, Google announced that it is expanding Google Fit feature that uses smartphone’s camera and flash to track heart to more Android smartphones. Now, the company has also started to roll out the feature for Apple iPhones. As many smartphones do not have dedicated sensors to measure heart rate, users can track it by placing finger on the rear camera. The phone guides users to place the finger in the right place and it also advises them to move to a place with better lighting.

The app detects the change in the colour finger and provides readings. The observations can be saved on the Google Fit app as well. The company has specially mentioned on its blog that the tracking is not intended to diagnose, cure, mitigate, prevent or treat any disease or condition. If you want to know how to track heart rate on Android and iOS smartphones through camera, you can follow these steps.

1.

Open Google Fit app on your Android and iOS smartphone.

2.

If your device has received the feature, you will be able to see a ‘Check your heart rate’ option on the home page. Tap on that.

3.

Now place your fingertip over the rear facing camera lens on your smartphone. Make sure that you are in a well-lit area, or you can turn on the flashlight by pressing the button at the bottom right corner of the screen.

4.

Once the app starts measuring the heart rate you can see a message on the screen that reads “Detecting the pulse in your fingertip. Keep your hand still and apply light pressure.”

5.

The app takes almost 30 seconds to measure your heart rate and once it is done, you will be able to see your heart rate on a new window.

6.

If you wish to save your heart rate measurement, you can tap on ‘Save measurement’ button on the screen.
