Indian Government to standardize charging ports for all devices in the Country | Digit
The Indian Government plans to hold a meeting on August 17. This meeting will be to seek information from the tech and telecom brands to decide and have a standard charging port for all the devices in India. As a result, there will be a standard charging
The European Union passed legislation urging tech brands to provide consumers with a common charging port for all their devices in June of this year. Not just for charging, but for connectivity and data transfer as well. As per a recent News18 report, the Indian Government is likely to adopt similar legislation and is currently planning to set a committee meeting for the same.
Will India legislate USB-C for all devices?
At present, consumer electronic brands use a variety of ports for charging, data transfer, and connectivity in different devices. While laptops and cameras have proprietary ports for inputs and outputs, smartphone brands like Apple use lighting ports for charging.
However, this new notion of standard port for all devices, if passed, will urge the consumer electronic brands to set common charging, input, and output ports for all devices. The committee for the same will be held on the 17th of August to understand and set the decided legislation legally. Brands and stakeholders will be a part of this committee meeting as well.
This is something that’s been already passed in the European Union.
It could be turned into law after the winter session of the EU parliament. Thence, the smartphone brands will get a 24-monthly timeline to change to a standardized portal for all their devices. And laptops will get an extended 40 months period to adopt the aforesaid legislation as they will also be a part of the regulation.
It is speculated that the brands will use USB-C for all their devices like accessories, earphones, smartphones, etc as the charging and connectivity ports.
We will keep a close watch on the developments around this matter in the Indian context. We reckon the tech media and most consumers would highly appreciate this move from the government.
