Inside Flipkart’s downsizing drive: layoffs, meagre pay hikes, more PIPs

Flipkart has joined the list of companies that have been laying off employees in hoards as part of rationalisation measures.

Synopsis

While Flipkart denies that it has laid off employees, multiple sources within the company tell ET Prime that a stealth downsizing exercise is underway. According to them, the company’s annual workforce streamlining and the post-appraisal performance improvement programme have affected an unusually large number of people in recent months.

In early December 2022, a mid-level Flipkart employee was asked by his manager to join a one-on-one virtual call. Many employees of the e-commerce major were working from home at the time. A few minutes into the call, the axe fell. To his utter shock, the employee was asked to resign. “There was no clarity on the reason for it. They didn’t pin it down to performance, nor did they say it was a cost-cutting exercise,” the employee tells ET Prime
